i suppose one last post is in order.

i'm chillin here at fusion (which is the name of our classroom building, in case i never mentioned it) bumming around on the internet a bit.

my original plan for today had been to go to the botanical gardens and *finally* take pictures.

plan, however, is being thwarted by the rain. yes, after a nice week last week, the stupid rain is back. its not raining right now, but i'm afraid it will start again if i go all the way out there with my camera and no shelter. the forecast for tomorrow is only 10% chance of precipitation, so, loathe as i am to schedule something i really want to do for my very last day, i might have to push back the botanical gardens to tomorrow. so it better not rain dammit.

i really should have gone last wednesday, as i had planned, instead of getting work done on my paper. oh well.

my new plan for the rest of the day? i might go take pictures by the university, because it is super close. i want to use my 120mm camera though, and i'm not sure if it is sunny enough out. we'll see what i decide. then i think i am going to do a little bit of packing. or maybe a lot of packing so i dont have to worry about it tomorrow. there is a ton of crap in my room and i dont know where it all came from. plus, roomie leaves tomorrow, so it'd be a good idea to make sure we sort out our random stuff. then i think i'm going to go see a movie (and i'm again annoyed about the rain because i was going to combine botanical gardens with the theatre that is nearby it) - "clubland". not actually sure if it is coming to the US, but it looks really good, and actually stars the same guy who was in "west", an eh film from the festival that everyone loved.

saturday night we went to a rugby game- qantas wallabies vs. south africa. did you know the teams essentially have the same colors? yeah, well they do, which is kinda really annoying. we ended sitting near a bunch of south african fans, which was also annoying because i had planned on using audience cues for when to cheer, and uh, australia man! australia! it was a weird game, and not what i expected- i thought i sort of understood rugby before the game, but not so much during the game at all. but australia came from behind in the 2nd half (much as they did against new zealand 1 week prior) and won. so it was fun.

sunday we finally went on a wine tour. we get on the bus though, and the driver tells us that magical upgrade because its the reptile tour! what. the. hell. (i should mention that its the reptile tour plus wine tour, so you go to the reptile park first and *then* the wine tour itinerary) so this pissed me off a bit...and i think my annoyance bummed out one of the other girls (to the extent that she decided to move to not-sitting-next-to-me on the bus. :( that was sad because then i had to move and sit all alone and not near any of the 5 friends who had come on the tour.) but anyway, we went to the reptile park (where their famed crocodile, eric, had *died* the week before) and took pictures with koalas and kangeroos, which was kind of neat (but i would have rather had that time to be wine touring, you know? we already went to the zoo.) then we went to a vineyard, ordered lunch, went and tasted several wines and liquers, and then had lunch. i found a wine i really liked, and bought a bottle. then we headed to 2 more vineyards, one of which gave us a tour of their operating center. that was pretty cool. found another wine i liked (actually 2, but i only bought 1) and a chocolate liquer that was really good. i'm going to give it to my brother in a "lets try it out on ice cream!" way. oh yeah. then we went to part of the village (only had like, 15 minutes) and went to the smelly cheese shop and a fudge shop. not as cool as i'd hoped, but oh well. overall it was a lot of fun. i like white wine. i sort of feel bad i dont like red, particularly because i wanted to bring back some for the family and they like reds. oh well.

okay. now i'm going to look at movietimes. and...and...pack! and omg leaving in 2 days! i'm so excited to be coming home.

last week! [Jul. 4th, 2007|06:24 pm]
well, i have 1 week left. wow! its really going to fly by. until monday, and then it will seem like forever until i get to leave on wednesday.

today, in the mail, came a little present for me. what was it, dare you ask? a free film festival tshirt! i won it in a little online entry thing! I wasn't sure if it was going to work out, because you're supposed to live in australia...but since i have an australian address that it could be sent to, everything worked out! it was so exciting when they emailed me to tell me that i won! yay!

right now we're in the middle of home-work week. we had presentations on monday, and now we have a paper and another presentation for friday. so i am currently working on my paper, which is on nothing other than a promotional scheme for the vagina monologues. [totally found an internship on their website today, btw. oh the excitement.] so the next few days are sort of filled with that.

this weekend is excitement:
-saturday we're going to the wallabies vs. south africa rugby game, part of the tri-nations cup. it should be really exciting even though i dont know much about rugby. i wonder if south africa does anything exciting, like the all black's little maori war dance.
-sunday we're finally going on the wine tour that was canceled last time penina and i tried to go. this should also be super exciting, with wine and cheese and chocolate and yay!

well, now i should get back to work.

i have a cupcake.

happy independence day all!

so i finally get myself some internets in new zealand. (a whole hour for free! omg it is totally exciting) and the sad thing? I have no access to zephyr. none. damn. i had hoped, but alas. so i shall content myself to check my email, though god there is a ton of message-board-like crap about techcash and i dont even know what that i am not going to read right now.

so, new zealand. well, i just got off a dolphin watch cruise. we saw no dolphins. i vomited 3 times. i even had the excitement of getting a nosebleed *while* vomiting that last time. that was *fun*. but until the vomitous time, it was a fun little cruise. the beginning was kind of like a rollercoaster, we were crashing up and down on the waves. which was actually good and fun. later though, when we would slow to look at the islands (did i mention i am in the bay of islands?) and the boat would rock a little....not good. not good at all. BUT i have a cold right now, and so i cant actually feel much of the nausea. its kind of awesome. because usually you feel nauseous for several minutes before actually barfing. but because of my head cold? totally only had about 10 seconds warning, which was enough to get a bag, sit down, etc. so thats one plus side.

so yes, that means i do indeed have a head cold. though the sea voyage plus some fake-sudafed last night has helped clear it mostly up i think. we'll see. fucking dry air in rotorua...i knew it would get me sick, my sinuses were killing me there.

so....lets see. we went white water rafting on thursday. i mentioned that during my quick post. but yeah, it was so much fun. 7 meter waterfall. i bought a cd of pictures, and cannot wait until i can put them online. yay! it was awesome! and it didnt end right after the waterfalls either. we got to go down quite a stretch of river, with small rapids and stuff. it was a lot of fun. and because we were covered in wetsuits, etc., we didnt get cold like, at all. (except for when we were paddling into the rapids and the water was flooding into the raft and it was a little cold...but not for long!) absolutely awesome time. so much better than the time i went in the adirondacks. these were real rapids. one of the rafts flipped when it went down the falls (our guides wanted that to happen to us) and there are pictures of it happening, like, slow motion. its awesome.

wednesday, after the maori village (slight disappointment, not going to lie, though i probably had too high hopes) kristen and i walked into town (rotorua still) and we went to the polynesian spa for mudwraps. it was awesome. i bought some mud to bring back. very cool. there are all these geothermal pools there. touristy place.

and tuesday, we were in Taupo, founding place of trout. no, really. there are pictures of fish *everywhere* like little carvings on the streets and a big metal fish in town and yeah. ohhhh yeah.

okay. thats most of the trip. lots of driving-on-the-bus time, which for me means sleeping-on-the-bus time so i dont get carsick. we just picked up another 16 people yesterday, because they are going to do the tour the opposite direction, and its weird, because there are so many of them! we were just starting to get to know the old ones, and now half of them are gone (left in auckland yesterday).

well, the festival is over, and in just about 17 hours, I head to New Zealand.

should be a lot of fun, i'm looking forward to it. the girls i am going with keep saying words like "hiking" and "exercise" and i'm getting a bit afraid...we shall see how it goes :)

i am a bit sad the festival is over, but am also sort of relieved. I saw the last showing tonight, "after the wedding" which i believe is out in the US. it was really good. The past 16 days have been really hectic, some with 4 movies a day, but it was a lot of fun. i saw a bunch of really good movies (i hear "once" just opened in the states. go see it now.) and some okay movies and some movies that were utter crap in my mind. but i saw a bunch of different stuff, saw a bunch of shorts, which was something pretty new for me, and awesome.

its starting to feel like it is going to end really soon now. i have 2.5 weeks left, which is still substantial, but am getting ready for my week in new zealand, then its a week of bam bam projects project project bam, then a few days of squeezing in things i didnt get to do and taking pictures of stuff i need to, and then before you know it, i'm home!

eeeeee!

how is the summer going for y'all? i am gossip starved! post a comment and tell me something interesting!

TEEEETH! TEETH TEETH TEETH TEETH TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETH [Jun. 18th, 2007|02:39 pm]
one of the guys uploaded some of his pictures to facebook, and i have for youuuuuuu:

yep. cate on the red carpet.

in other news, i saw the most amazing movie last night. called...TEETH! )

but yeah. it was amazing.

and before it, there was a short called "spider" that started with the quote "its all fun and games until someone loses an eye" -Mum.
which was hilarious and *such* a good opening to the film.

you all have to see it. seriously.

you know how they say that men who buy huge big SUVs are overcompensating for something?

that was what part of the movie i saw tonight was about.

the man was so obsessed with his car, he made his girl read/yell out the SUV's specifications while he fucked her.

such an amusing movie. called park, if you're interested. my guess is that it is coming to the US, if it isnt already.

besides this overcompensating man, the movie includes a girl who is trying (rather unsuccessfully and hilariously) to kill herself, another woman who realizes she is a lesbian, 2 guys who are nudists and are trying to spread the joy to 2 female coworkers. etc etc etc lots of fun.

i missed the first 5 minutes, because i got out of my other movie late, and i would so see this again.

not too much to report. have seen a bunch more movies. some good, some not so good.

was supposed to go tour wine country yesterday, but it was canceled due to flooding, so that was sad.

ummm....yeah. things are fun and good, but i miss home and everyone. am kind of looking forward to getting back in 4 weeks. it seems like such a long time.

hula girls!!! [Jun. 10th, 2007|10:12 pm]
so weeks ago, i was looking through the film program online. and it was huge and ridiculous. but i found a movie called "hula girls" about japanese coal workers who learn how to hula dance so they can work in a hawaiian theme park that comes to the town.

and it looked cool, so i decided i had to see it.

and i fit it into my schedule.

and i finally got to see it tonight.

and it was amazing. SO amazing. i absolutely adored it. it had cute parts. it had funny parts (imagine a *huge* clumsy girl trying to learn how to hula) imagine sad parts, and imagine just a completely awesome movie.

it was so fantastic.

i wish this movie had had a Q&A session, instead of "the walker" which i saw this morning which wasnt actually good at all. it would have been so awesome to chat with the director/actors of the film.

so happy about the past 2 nights' movies. *happy sigh*

amazing.

gala gala gala!!! [Jun. 9th, 2007|02:26 am]
i am tipsy. yay!

so tonight, we got all dolled up and headed down to the state theatre.

there was a red carpet.

as we walked up the side, we heard "cate! cate, look over here! cate!"

yes. YES. cate blanchett was on the red carpet as we arrived. cate *fucking* blanchett. beautiful. i got a few of those "i'm super far away and my camera isnt focusing well and hey there is a photographer blocking half your face and its blurry but YOU'RE A CELEBRITY ON MY CAMERA" pictures, which i will display in their beautiful blurry glory in a bit. some of the others got there earlier, and thus got better pictures of her.

we were ushered inside, because we, ofcourse, were not on the red carpet. so we sort of chilled right inside of the red carpet area...hoping to sneak a peak of more of the red carpet.

and guess who walked right by me.

yes.

YES.

CATE BLANCHETT!!! 2 feet away from me. walking by with ehr friends. she was wearing a black dress, it was pretty and i recall thinking she looks different in person (and thin!!). but seriously now. she was 2 feet away from me. for several seconds. i didnt pull out my camera because 1. it would have been rude and 2. cameras = not allowed in the lobby.

i shall mention now, when i am on the cate bit, that cate was sitting in the mezzanine (and we were in the stalls) not far above us. front row of the mezzanine, just a little to my left. i saw her standing up at one point before the movie started, and i saw her get up to leave at the end. so awesome. it was so exciting when we saw her up there.

now then. the opening night. after the cate excitement, we looked for more red carpet people but didnt recognize anyone, and there were all these announcements that the movie was starting in 5 minutes, so we got to our seats. there were comp. water bottles. which was awesome, because i was totally thirsty. 40 minutes later....it finally began. president and director came out, thanked sponsors, said words. they had an ASL translator, which i thought was cool. they played a short, about an aboriginal woman, called "nana", which was pretty funny actually, and enjoyable. apparently tis brand new. then there was this little bit about how awesome film is, by some of the people involved in the festival.

then finally, the film began. "la vie en rose"

it was...interesting. really well made. lots of music. i found it interesting the way they did the different times in her life, and the interspersing. but i was sort of...amazed by some of the facets of edith paif's life...she wasnt really a good person...and that was sad.

so then we headed to the town hall, for the after party. we have wristbands for it. huge line, but got in. penina and i put our coats in coatcheck (did i mention it rained all day and night? yeah.) and then checked our lipstick in the bathroom. we then checked out the main room....awesome. dark, with lots of red and purple lighting. band on a stage. bar in the center. grabbed some champagne. it was *good* champagne. very tasty, and i am not usually a fan.

went and found friends. caught eyes with CUTE GUYS. oh yeah. so hot. if only i had actually taken the time to chat one up, but it got *really* crowded. more champagne. there was a bailey's bar, with different cocktails. i had a chocolate mint martini (so tasty) and a caramel expresso drink (also tasty) which was awesome. and more champagne.

marguerite and i chatted it up with a director of a documentary (the seige, set in peru) about film and her experiences and just the festival and stuff. she was almost kidnapped! just all was really cool.

blahblahblah. it was awesome. just so much fun.

there were goodie bags. with lots of weird things in them like coffee and stuff. but a lipgloss and i think a perfume, and it was a GOODIE BAG!!!! we got *goodie bags* like we were cool and celebrities! (except, you know, nothing pricey inside like an ipod or anything). but exciting nonetheless.

now i am home, after a quick cab ride.

and i should probably get to bed. because i am tired and still tipsy and typing is hard and people are making fun of me online.

i booked my tickets to new zealand today!!!

i'm going, with 2 (maybe 3, the last hasnt booked yet) girls to new zealand on

maori village and maybe i'll go swimming with some dolphins!! exciting.

also today, penina and i booked tickets for a wine tasting tour on tuesday,
because we dont have movies until nighttime. so we're going to hunter valley,
and having tea and then learning about wine and then trying a bunch of wines
and then chocolate and cheese and exciting! it should be a lot of fun. penina
is big on the exploring places, so she is a good one to go to for ideas for
what to do around sydney and the surrounding NSW.

i should start getting ready for the gala! we leave in 45 minutes!!!

more tickets!!! + gala [Jun. 8th, 2007|01:17 pm]
one of the girls gave me 2 extra tickets that she had.

yay!!!

going to go redeem those soon, and then, including opening and closing nights, i will be seeing 30 films, plus an entire day of shorts (the dendys) in the next 2 weeks. yay. yay!!!

the gala is tonight. we all looked at eachother's dresses last night. exciting!!! i think i am not going to wear a coat. and i think i might regret that, if it rains. *but* who wants to carry around a coat at the *party* after the screening??? no one. no one wants to carry around a coat when they could be meeting nicole kidman! [no, i dont think she will actually be there...but you never know!!!]

okay. enough excitement. time to go redeem tickets!!!

tickets!!!! [Jun. 4th, 2007|07:55 pm]
i'm uploading with email post. this is cool.

anyway.

today i went and exchanged my ticket vouchers for actual tickets to the different films at the film festival. its exciting. but i already lost one of them! i'm sad. i might try to go back tomorrow and see if they will reissue it for me, but i am not hopeful :( i have 1 voucher left, so i have to decide if i want to buy a 2nd ticket for "kids in da hood" (the ticket i lost) or if i want to check out a different movie. so we shall see we shall see.

then i walked around a bit, went into the victoria shopping galleries. everything is so expensive here though. i should not shop. i did pick up a few books today at a bookstore (also ridiculously expensive!) because i was a little homesick and want to read the old books again.

okay. now i'm going to go make some dinner, as i went a little crazy excited at the grocery store today. my pasta looks so exciting. so off to the kitchen.

bad jenn, not updating much.

sorry sorry, i keep running out of time when i am on the internets, which is only either before or after class when the building is still open. i have yet to break down and go to an internet cafe, but maybe.

so lets see, a quick summary of some interesting things, which i will maybe flesh out later.

-we went to manly wharf/beach on thursday. had to take the ferry to get there. it was very cool. beach was pretty. daryl, one of the guys who runs the program, led us down a rock trail. it was like a death trail. so not cool. my camera was swinging all around, around my neck, and i was terrified i was going to fall on the rocks and kill it. marguerite and i got daryl to buy us drinks after the experience. we went and got pizza there too. it was tasty. the pizza is thin-crust here, which was actually pretty good.

-last night we went to kings cross, which is the "red light district" and we went to a club. as we were walking, some guys were fighting in the street. one dude was like "look man, i'm glad you want to fight me, but we cant be friends in the morning!" .... :)
the club was not hugely cool, but we still had fun- free champagne before 10:30pm, so that was cool. and the dancing was fun. there was this guy dancing near us, and he was so crazy, it was awesome. i may or may not have taken some video footage with my digital camera...

what else what else....

-marguerite and i found this neighborhood bar last night for dinner. we've both found we enjoy stella on tap. tasty. except for the fact that i DROPPED my glass of it when it was still full. shattered allllll over the table. i am a spaz. and cut my arm. :( it took forever to clot, which was a bit upsetting.

ummmmmmmm we went shopping yesterday! this one store had a HUGE sale. nothing over $20. awesome. i got a little jacket. and [info]minxwolf was right about me needing to bring a jacket...it is chilly at night here. i'm kind of screwed actually, so i dont know what i will do on the really cold nights. besides stay in and freeze. hmmm. hmm hmm hmmmmm.

today we have our first film class. as opposed to entertainment promotion classes, which we have had all week. (and film screenings, which we have also had.)

edit: omg! so right before being able to post, I kicked the back of the computers, and the computer *shut off*
i was so sad, thinking i would have to retype *all* of this.
but i have a break now (was in class) and came back to the computer and livejournal SAVED the draft!!!! yayyyyyyyyyyyyyy rejoice! lets post this before i fuck it up again.

greetings from australia!!!! [May. 28th, 2007|10:11 am]
[Current Location |SYDNEY!!!]

i am here! and finally have the internets. yay! before I forget, here is some more contact information:

My phone number where i live: dial 011612 to get australia, then the number 93471065.
My new cell phone number, which i need to charge still (and would probably be really expensive for you to call): dial 011614 then 0416437154.

so lets see, where to begin...

flight was good. long. my tv didnt work (so unfair) so i slept most of it. I had window seats for both of my flights, which made it hard to get out and walk around. i'm going to need to change that for my return flights.

got to the hotel (unilodge) and got the room key, etc. my roommate (christine, very nice and fun and cute) had cleaned up and left me a note. I only had 1/2 an hour before i needed to head to orientation, so I hopped in the shower real quick and then went and met pasquale (runs the housing side of the program, and logistics) and fareed (from princeton, also arrived sunday when i did.). we headed over to sydney university- beautiful campus, i have to go back and take pictures. the trees have all these huge knots in them.

at the university, they were going over water safety and stuff. who was going over it? this *hot* aussie with an *incredible* accent. holy crap, it was stereotype, and it was PERFECT. he told us about surfing too, and there is a learn-to-surf trip in about 3 weeks and i think i might do it. wouldn't it be cool to learn how to surf, in australia??? or at least have a picture of it!!! so we'll see.

then we had a break...went to see the mall across from unilodge. there is a grocery store in there, so we went in...and got frozen dinners to heat up for lunch. i was kind of disappointed that there wasnt a better prepared-food selection, but i will keep exploring.

then, we went to bondi beach! it was beautiful, and sunny out (in winter!) and the sand was so soft and squishy and moundy and my feet really enjoyed it. so we chilled there for a little bit, then some people went to go on this beach walk thing along the cliffs, where you walk by/through like, 4 beaches? i decided i did not have the energy for a 1.5 hour walk/hike. so, dan and i (dan is another film student, and didnt feel like doing the hike either) headed up from the beach, where there was this little festival going on. i got some sweet corn-on-the-cob on a stick. it was so tasty and fun. then we headed back to the bus, and got to bondi junction. dan headed off to walk around a bit there and grab some food, and i took a train back to central. the trains are double-deckers and so nice.

then, i walked around central and back to unilodge (on broadway.) i sort of...wasnt entirely sure if i was going the correct way, because we went through a tunnel to get *to* the train station, and I did not locate a tunnel on my way back...but i *did* find a map, and I knew the correct streetname, so i walked around (only 1/2way, not so bad!) the train station, recognized some streets, and found my way over to george/broadway street. i was very proud of myself.

so i strolled back, and on my way i found this really cute little bread store! they have little trays and tongs that you go around and pick up what you want on. it was cute, and they had all these tasty pastries and bready things. I will be back there like...every other day. so i got a cinnamon donut (holy crap, it was even better than how it smelled. so perfect) and a chocolate croissant, which i had for breakfast this morning. then i went to the mall, and went to the *other* grocery store (coles) which i think i like more than the other one (bilo). i picked up some extremely random things (like, totally random, i am not kidding). i think christine and i are going to go back today and split some coldcuts, bread, and a brita filter system thinger so that we can drink our tap water.

then i went up to target and bought an extra towel because they only supplied us with 1. i should have packed handtowels, but i just didnt know! oh well. i found this cute little kitchen stuff store...oh man. my weakness. it was so cute and had such pretty stuff and i saw something i wanted to buy for my sister, but i feel like finding something your first day is so...not looking hard enough? so i might wait a while before going back to see if it is still there.

went home (aka across the street) and unpacked. threw on the tv (we get like, 5 channels, and 2-3 of them are sports, so i watched some rugby and thought of d2) and wrote in my little travel log. started getting tired (it was around 7pm) but then shannon came over, and a bunch of us went out to dinner. we walked down to king street (long walk, in my mind) and found a thai restaurant (thai times 9. heh) it was pretty tasty. the spring rolls were *really good* which is sort of my mark of a decent/good thai restaurant. everyone was like, so thrilled by the food. i went with my usual and got a garlic sauce...and i have to say i was not impressed, because it was bland and not spicy at all. oh well. i will try something else next time. i got bit by a mosquito or something on my finger though, and it swelled to twice its size. sort of not cool. sort of freaky. i couldnt bend it for a little bit. but by the time we got back home, the swelling had stopped at least, and i took some aspirin and went to bed. i can bend the finger now, and a majority of the swelling is gone, so hopefully it will be back to normal by tomorrow.

havent done too much today, just got my cell phone and a tour of the facilities where we study/have classes (its called fusion. weird.) we have class in maybe 15 minutes where we finally get some info on the film festival and tickets and our schedule, because apparently they havent done much film festival-related stuff yet on the trip.

now its time for me to check the friends page on the regular journal...you'll probably hear back from me again tomorrow.

ooh, and i found this cute little breakfast place nearby fusion. it kind of looks expensive (everything here is though) *but* they have pancakes, so i'll have to go some morning.
