i am here! and finally have the internets. yay! before I forget, here is some more contact information:
My phone number where i live: dial 011612 to get australia, then the number 93471065. My new cell phone number, which i need to charge still (and would probably be really expensive for you to call): dial 011614 then 0416437154.
so lets see, where to begin...
flight was good. long. my tv didnt work (so unfair) so i slept most of it. I had window seats for both of my flights, which made it hard to get out and walk around. i'm going to need to change that for my return flights.
got to the hotel (unilodge) and got the room key, etc. my roommate (christine, very nice and fun and cute) had cleaned up and left me a note. I only had 1/2 an hour before i needed to head to orientation, so I hopped in the shower real quick and then went and met pasquale (runs the housing side of the program, and logistics) and fareed (from princeton, also arrived sunday when i did.). we headed over to sydney university- beautiful campus, i have to go back and take pictures. the trees have all these huge knots in them.
at the university, they were going over water safety and stuff. who was going over it? this *hot* aussie with an *incredible* accent. holy crap, it was stereotype, and it was PERFECT. he told us about surfing too, and there is a learn-to-surf trip in about 3 weeks and i think i might do it. wouldn't it be cool to learn how to surf, in australia??? or at least have a picture of it!!! so we'll see.
then we had a break...went to see the mall across from unilodge. there is a grocery store in there, so we went in...and got frozen dinners to heat up for lunch. i was kind of disappointed that there wasnt a better prepared-food selection, but i will keep exploring.
then, we went to bondi beach! it was beautiful, and sunny out (in winter!) and the sand was so soft and squishy and moundy and my feet really enjoyed it. so we chilled there for a little bit, then some people went to go on this beach walk thing along the cliffs, where you walk by/through like, 4 beaches? i decided i did not have the energy for a 1.5 hour walk/hike. so, dan and i (dan is another film student, and didnt feel like doing the hike either) headed up from the beach, where there was this little festival going on. i got some sweet corn-on-the-cob on a stick. it was so tasty and fun. then we headed back to the bus, and got to bondi junction. dan headed off to walk around a bit there and grab some food, and i took a train back to central. the trains are double-deckers and so nice.
then, i walked around central and back to unilodge (on broadway.) i sort of...wasnt entirely sure if i was going the correct way, because we went through a tunnel to get *to* the train station, and I did not locate a tunnel on my way back...but i *did* find a map, and I knew the correct streetname, so i walked around (only 1/2way, not so bad!) the train station, recognized some streets, and found my way over to george/broadway street. i was very proud of myself.
so i strolled back, and on my way i found this really cute little bread store! they have little trays and tongs that you go around and pick up what you want on. it was cute, and they had all these tasty pastries and bready things. I will be back there like...every other day. so i got a cinnamon donut (holy crap, it was even better than how it smelled. so perfect) and a chocolate croissant, which i had for breakfast this morning. then i went to the mall, and went to the *other* grocery store (coles) which i think i like more than the other one (bilo). i picked up some extremely random things (like, totally random, i am not kidding). i think christine and i are going to go back today and split some coldcuts, bread, and a brita filter system thinger so that we can drink our tap water.
then i went up to target and bought an extra towel because they only supplied us with 1. i should have packed handtowels, but i just didnt know! oh well. i found this cute little kitchen stuff store...oh man. my weakness. it was so cute and had such pretty stuff and i saw something i wanted to buy for my sister, but i feel like finding something your first day is so...not looking hard enough? so i might wait a while before going back to see if it is still there.
went home (aka across the street) and unpacked. threw on the tv (we get like, 5 channels, and 2-3 of them are sports, so i watched some rugby and thought of d2) and wrote in my little travel log. started getting tired (it was around 7pm) but then shannon came over, and a bunch of us went out to dinner. we walked down to king street (long walk, in my mind) and found a thai restaurant (thai times 9. heh) it was pretty tasty. the spring rolls were *really good* which is sort of my mark of a decent/good thai restaurant. everyone was like, so thrilled by the food. i went with my usual and got a garlic sauce...and i have to say i was not impressed, because it was bland and not spicy at all. oh well. i will try something else next time. i got bit by a mosquito or something on my finger though, and it swelled to twice its size. sort of not cool. sort of freaky. i couldnt bend it for a little bit. but by the time we got back home, the swelling had stopped at least, and i took some aspirin and went to bed. i can bend the finger now, and a majority of the swelling is gone, so hopefully it will be back to normal by tomorrow.
havent done too much today, just got my cell phone and a tour of the facilities where we study/have classes (its called fusion. weird.) we have class in maybe 15 minutes where we finally get some info on the film festival and tickets and our schedule, because apparently they havent done much film festival-related stuff yet on the trip.
now its time for me to check the friends page on the regular journal...you'll probably hear back from me again tomorrow.
ooh, and i found this cute little breakfast place nearby fusion. it kind of looks expensive (everything here is though) *but* they have pancakes, so i'll have to go some morning. |
